023 11 Locura Chile 9 how about 6000 feet before breakfast
It was supposed to get really hot on our next part of the trip, so we decided to beat the heat by leaving at 6 in the morning climbing up the mountainside facing the village. We started at 1200 m (3600 f to 9600 f) and climbed up to 3200 m within 5 hours having breakfast at 11 at the mountain top. The horses were just unbelievably tough. We had to cross a wide cauldron on the elevation line, which was not easy due to lose gravel and rocks that would slide down the mountainside, while the horses were sinking deep into the gravel at every step. We finally reached the other side of the range crossing the summit and descending in the same deep gravel just of different Grey colour. We finally reach the trail that I had as an alternative route at the crossing of two valleys and as we continued up the other side of the valley, we came down on we found water and grass where we let the horses get their fill. Again, we rode up to a summit at 3200 m (9600 f) and descended on the other side leaving the planed route in search for water and grass.
There was water here 3 years ago but now it seemed bone dry and when we reached the majada there was no water in site. About 1000 yards down and on the left side we saw a green band of grass that promised feed and water. Reaching it we decided to camp here having all we needed.
