2023 06 25 ex Alpe Adria Trail Day 18
We had a nice evening with Severin and his family at Lago Cancanon and when i woke in the morning the dew was frozen on the ground.
We packed up and had breakfast, departing at about 8 am for the last leg across Passo del Fuorn and Fontana di S-charl. We took it easy, knowing this would be our last day on this trail and with the weather being perfectly sunny and chilly we rode past some beautiful meadows and up the single trail of Aua Val Mora to the Passo Fuerno. The bike race had caught up with us again and while we were having our iced coffee at the restaurant, the horses were grazing and taken pictures off. Crossing the last mountain range for today we reached S-Charl and i found some people that were willing to take me down to San Jon where my car was parked. 5 hours later, the horses were back home near Schaffhausen in their open stable and we had a final beer, thinking about the memories of this trip. Gee was a great company and we were incredibly lucky with the weather, not having experienced any showers on the entire trail, except for some downpours during the night.
We did 640 km in 18 days and climbed a total of 24000 m averaging 48 Lkm a day. With an average distance of 35 km a day.

2Z023 06 23 ex Alpe Adria trail ff day 16. At 5 am ightning and thunder were only seconds apart when I woke and packed up my stuff. The horses were calm and dosing but allert when first lightning hit. I got everything up to the hut and 15 min later the host opened the restaurant door and offered some coffee, which I gladly accepted. The cheese maker arrived also and Gee joined us a little later. We got the horses out of their fencing and brought them up to the shed where our stuff was stored. We checked the shoes and I had to to renail Mansu back right shoe that shifted back on the trail up the Tatscher pass yesterday, cause I only used 5 nails instead of 6 hoping it would work. Well it did not. Lesson learned. He uses his hind feet extensively. And that is actually a good thing. It is just hard on the shoes of his back feet.  After that we walked the horses down to the Vinschgau valley riding up to Prato at the foot of the Stelvio pass. After about 38 km we were in Prato and at the first farmhouse we asked about a field for the horses. The young farmer was happy to show us a field that was fenced in on 3 sides and there was a watertank. His girlfriend wanted to ride one of the horses but Mansu was much more interested in the green than obeying the new rider.
We put the the GPS on Mansu and walked into town to get something to drink and have an early dinner. We will sleep above a pig shed next to the field the horses are on and will be leaving early tomorrow morning.
Gee met some fellow people from her home town and we spent some time swaping stories and drinking beer. At 6 pm we got our meals and as it was getting dark we returned to the camp.

2023 06 ex Adria Alpe trail ff Day 17
At 12 pm Gee said she heard horses trotting on the pavement, when she woke me. I checked to see the horses and saw a white figure standing, where the horses were supposed to be. My GPS tracker said, the horses are within their fence. So we went back to sleep. Then 30 minutes later my phone rang twice and I figured something was amiss. It was a local number and when i answered, Max was on the phone, asking me if i wasen t missing any horses. Confused i went to check and yes the fence was broken, and the horses were gone. He had them secured and asked where we were at and that he would pick us up with his car. We had the horses  fenced in with our electrical fencing, Mansu had a GPS tracker on his neck and both of them are wearing a tag with my phone number.
What I had mistakenly seen as my grey horse, was the white watertank standing at the edge of the field. Max picked us up and drove us into town where some people were holding our horses. We thanked them and guided our horses back to where we slept. Why did my GPS not respond, when they left the fenced area. And why did they run anyway. `? Well on the way back i realized that the GPS tracker was no longer on Mansus Neck and must have been left in the field. And the swishing sound of the watering canons, was the reason they had taken off, when they started working around 12 pm. We refenced them farther away from the canons and i put my mat down, in front of the field. At dawn I went looking for the GPS tracker and yes there it was, laying in the field, the plastic peace broken. We saddled the horses and were off riding up the road to Stelvio Pass 25 km up the mountain. The horses did well, trotting and walking for 3,5 hours till we reached the summit where we run into a bicyle race. Wonderfully quiet without any cars or motor cycles we led the horses down the other side, drinking some coffe on top of the pass. Leading them down towards Umbrail pass, we turned off to reach Bocceta di Forcola, another overpass, that would lead us into the Val Fraele We had some lunch from our food box at the Malga on the trail down and at the first rifugio down az the lake we had a beer, the horses grazing in the near field.

One hour later we trotted along the lake to reach my friend Severin at San Giacomo, where we would spend the night.

2023 06 22 ex alpe adria trail ff day 15 we had a gret evening with Thomas and his wife at the local restaurant. But according to the weather news, its getting hot around here. 33 in the valley (91 in us norm) and I can't stand it so we decided to give the horses and me a break and travel passed the Sarntheimer alp with their low alitude and high temperatures. We would hike down the valley and A friend of mine would pick us up at the interstate and drive us for 2 hours through Bolzano and Merano to Ulten Valley where we had Lunch with another outfitter friend and the packed up to clime the 2500 M Tascher pass. It was marked as a 4.5 hour assent and 1 hour decent but we made it in 3.5 hours total. Our horses are just doing great. Right now they are walking around the parking lot of the Tascher huette trying to find the best bits of grass. We will be getting our meal soon and then we will have to decide where i will crash tonight. A storm is brewing above us.

2023 06 20 ex alpe Adria trail ff day 12 we left the Refugio right after breakfast at 8 am and rode up to the Valparello overpass. 8 km. We walked down till we hit the road going up to Prolongia. At 1 pm we were walking down from Prolongia to the base of the gondola. Now we needed to get over Passo Selle and then up to Passo Groeden. The horses did show off their qualities pushing up the mountain for more than 2 hours straight After Groeden we walked them down and up to the rif Ciavaz. We got there after they had closed the kitchen but since the owner was entertaining guests they organized a plate with sausage and cheese and some beer. Left the toilet open for us to use and showed us where to get electricity. Before they left they called us for 2 free shots of schnapps. Custom here. We enjoyed it and the horses the alpine grass.

2023 06 21 ex Alpe Adria trail ff Saiser Alm. Gee slept in the open portal of the hut, while I put my mat on a little platform next to the fenced in grazing area for the horses. The night was windy but warm and waking up at 5 my sleeping bag was little wet from dew. The horses had well rested and rolled a couple times. At least that's what Mansu looked like.
We had some home brewed coffee and took off at 7 going up to rif. Comici and then back down to get to Saiser Alm. We had a second breakfast at one of the huts along the way and at 1 we were at Kastelruth where Thomas was waiting for us. The horses got a well deserved shower and some hay and mash and are now standing dosing in the shadow of a cool indoor box. We showered and had beer, it's 26 Celsius and I am laying in the shade on a cot typing away..In the evening we went to a restaurant with the whole family and enjoyed some stories that Thomas was telling how he won a horse in a lottery, and how that got him started on horseback riding.

023 06 19 Ex alpe adria trail day 12
We stayed with our friend Clemens at Malga Bianca and shoed Mansu after 450 km his back feet wearing the duplos down faster than the front.
When we were done the local ferrier showed up for breakfast. So be it. We called the next place we were going to stay at and found out they were closing down for the week. Ok change of plans, we go straight for Cortina dAmpezzo and up the mountain on the other side to the well traveled horse route to Kastelruth. We reached the road up to the Rifugio Valporella, when stormclouds gathered above us and we happened to pass a Rifugio with great grass on their backyard, so we decided to stay here at 1600 m instead of at 2150 and 8 km before our planed destination, so the horses had a rest and great feed till tomorrow. we fenced them in pouring rain and then went up to take a shower. I just love the iralian food and the way they prepare a first plate with carbs and then a second plate with meat and veggies. We had some house wine and we both agrred, that this is what life is all about.

2023 06 18 ex Alpe Adria trail ff 11 day. We were up at 5.30 taking down the tarp and storing the sleeping bags and Matt's away. At 6 the church bells started ringing and 6 Canon shots were fired in memory of the successfully defeat of the Armee of Napoleon Bonaparte. At 6.30 we were on our way along the bike trail towards Italy. We found a bakery but no coffee and ate some day old crossants that rhe lady donated to us. At Innichen we rode across the overpass to Sexten and Moos leading us up to the tre Chimme.
This trail I rode 20 years ago on our trip from Munich to Venice and back. It was a steep uphill trail that was supposed to take 3.5 hours, we made it in 2 h walking behind the horses. There were less pedestrians than feared, but there were some ladies that felt the need to comment negatively on us taking the horses up here. If they just had a clue how much fun our horses have.
We reached the tre chimes and hiked down the other side to Malga Bianca where we stayed before.
Clemens told us to get some beer and wine and make our self at home, he would come by as soon as we finished the first bottle of wine. He showed up with some guests of his and took off again to take them up to the Rif. ARONZO at the tre Chimes. At 9.30 we were already sleeping he returned and we joined him in a plate of spaghetti and a Glas of wine.

2023 06 17 Alpe Adria trail day 10
Well the bad news first. The Alpe Adria trail has ended for us . The good news: but not the ride itself. We just have to realize that it still is to early to ride above 2700 m, due to the snow that fell in May and that has not melted yet. That means that tonight we will decide on a new route back to San Jon in Scuol Swizerland. We have covered 400 km in 10 days not counting elevation. And the horses are doing great. Today we walked down from Lienzer hut to Lienz and then trottert up another 25 km till we reached Abfaltersbach in the Draw River Valley. We met a couple riders standing on a bank in the river and the told us where to find a place for the horses. The ladies at the stables were all amazed at our adventures and  tried to find accommodations for us to no avail.
We showered the horses and put them in a fenced corals with water and hay while we went for a restaurant to take an internal shower.
We will be sleeping outside.

2023 06 15 Alpe Adria trail day 8
We walked down from the restaurant in whoes garden the horses were grazing and I slepped under my tarp.in pouring rain. But there is nothing like the drumming of raindrops on your tarp. Loving it. When we finally hit the bottom of Moelltall valley after 4 hours we found a guesthouse where we ordered some beer and ice coffee. From there on we trottet the next 20 km up to Rackowitzen, where we were recommended to a private stable Lisa Kropp from a lady in a 2. restaurant we found on the way. Arkan can walk a top speed of 9plus kmh for long distance while Mansur is jogging alongside. I am very happy how the two horses have handled themselves on this trip till now having covered more than 310 km in 7 days. Mansu is doing much better with trucks by now and in the next days he will have to proof his willingness to handle difficult situations in the mountains. We reached Rackowitzen shortly after 4 pm and were able to shower and wash our clothes, our horses grazing happily in a freshly cut field. We had Pizza and enjoyed the hospitality. 40 km
